Why on earth do we tip at restaurants?

Call me what you want but I dont feel obligated to tip and I dont tip every time I eat out. I never tip with my credit card because I dont have faith that the server will actually get the $. If I have two or three dollars in my wallet (I dont typically carry too much cash at all) I dont mind laying it down but I dont feel its my responsibility to make a servers time worth it either. If they feel they are worth more $ than what they are making then they can go provide skills to the community that would bring them a better wage. I know they have a tough job but so does much of the world. flame on......

People that don't tip for good service, when you know you should, and you are looking for any reason just to hold on to a few bucks, are jerks. Any attempt to dispute this is futile, and just makes you look worse.

There was a guy in one of these tipping threads that brought a check list. He used it to scientificaly evaluate his waitress and by the time the meal was over she usually scored about 3.7. The guy had not tipping down to a science. ISYN.

Actually in many restaurants, wait staff make really good money when factoring in tips.

In restaurants you frequent often, tipping for good service is essential for good service in subsequent visits.
When I was working as a server, I often recognized customers from previous visits. If they had stiffed me, more than once, they usually were passed to another server, or were given 2nd rate attention.

Likewise, my experience as a server has also helped me to learn how I can get 1st rate service and sometimes a table as others wait. Many times drinks are refilled in front of others. Fact of the matter is, politeness and money buys better service.

Thats why I dont see why there is such a pressure to tip and why most of you guys claim to tip so much.
It's really not that big a deal. The reason that this is a subject I've thought about is that I used to work on a construction crew with a bunch of cheapskates. We ate lunch together from time to time.

In my own anecdotal experience, the guy who doesn't tip is the most demanding person at the table.
"hey, let's see a little smile sweetheart"

Or just as bad, the guy who left a tract about Jesus in lue of a tip. (hey, maybe she hasn't heard the good news)
Food for the soul.... food for the soul.

You can grind those little books up and they'll help you get a little more milage out of your baby formula.

Thats the attitude I dont like, very entitlement-esque in my opinion. I dont need anyone to kiss my ass but you should provide quality service because its the job you signed up for not because you are expecting for someone to leave a tip at the end of the rainbow.
