Like the shotgun thread I just posted, my grandma has issues racking the slide on her 9mm, a Star BM (basically a mini 1911). I was looking at a Glock with a charging handle. Something like this:
http://www.tacticalgunparts.net/glo...ide-racker-charging-handle-for-glock-9mm.html

She has had surgery on her thumbs that make it difficult / painful to manipulate the slide in a normal fashion.

Any experience with these? Different or specific designs I should consider? Other guns that have similar accessories?

Get her a slide racker.

I'd like to avoid even going down to a .380. Certainly no less. If there isn't a satisfactory solution to keep reasonable power/capacity in an auto, she might as well get another wheelgun.

This problem comes up frequently, and I still do not understand it (and I am NOT trying to be a smartass here). How many times does the slide need to be racked on a defensive pistol? Only once!!! If she can't rack it, do it for her. Rack the slide on the BM, put it on "safe", and give it back to her. Problem solved. Again, how many times does it really NEED to be racked?

The options are limited. Since she's already acquainted with a 1911'ish platform, probably the best bet would be an actual 1911 9mm with a 4.25-5" slide and an alloy frame. That would give her 9-10+1, a better trigger than most and around a 12# recoil spring. There's plenty of traction on the slide serrations of a 1911, plus by manually cocking the hammer and then racking the slide, it's pretty easy to manipulate when loading.

I've always said there's a hole in the market where an EMP with a rail and 4.25" barrel should be, as well as a M&P Shield with a longer barrel/heavier slide with a lighter recoil spring, plus a longer grip that holds 10-12 in the mag and a rail for a light. Both would be excellent HD/CCW guns for people with smaller hands and less grip strength. Shame we don't have them already. :(
