I personally hate the safety behind the trigger. Thats only because I grew up on a Winchester and those are in the front. They are both fantastic guns.
Fiber optic on a vent rib can be pretty accurate with slugs even beyond 50 yards.
870 for sure. I've had 870, 500 and 590 and prefer almost everything of the 870 over the Mossberg's. The only thing I preferred on the Mossy over the 870 was the safety location. You can load through tube and combat load much more effectively. It's also MUCH MUCH easier to fix a malf on an 870 then it is a 500/590. Take down and repairs are much easier on the 870.
