It doesn't have to. Armed is armed.

You're trying to do the same thing we gripe about the MSM doing: cherry picking data. They quote "gun deaths" or "gun violence" rates in US vs other countries, when guns are severely restricted there. So it's an invalid representation. Trying to determine validity of police shooting based on whether the one shot had a gun vs armed in general is also invalid.

If someone has a brick, or a bat, or a knife, or whatever; and they come at me, I'm going to shoot them.

If you have backup with you, there can be the option of other less-lethal counters such as a taser, but you don't engage with a taser when someone is charging with a potentially lethal weapon without lethal backup.

So saying: an officer shooting an attacker who is armed - or is believed to be armed - is a reasonable response. Sure, there are exceptions, there are times the officer is wrong, but in general, shooting an attacker does not seem unreasonable.

Were some of those 581 unarmed "innocents"? Probably. But I don't for a second believe that the majority were, or that even half, or even a significant minority, were.

So police get go be judge, jury and executioner? Its not about inocence vs guilty. Its about trigger happy cops. In 2015 a mentally ill man with a brick was killed by police after they shot at him 14 times, hitting him 5 or 6 times. If you have to shoot a man holding a brick as a weapon maybe you shouldn't be a cop.

Something to consider:
Estimates range from 800,000 to over a Million LEO's in the United States (http://www.answers.com/Q/How_many_police_officers_are_employed_in_the_United_states) and if each one of those officers interacted with at least 5 'civilian' during the course of their duty day X 365 days a year = well over a Billion interactions between Leo's and the 'civilian populous per year in the United States. The fact(?) that only 581 people [so far] have been killed by Leos seems like a pretty small number, especially if you compare it to the number of Blacks killed by other Blacks each year in just Chicago alone.
Granted that there are LEO versus 'civilian' shootings that are not justified, but my take is that these are few and far between considering the number of interaction that occur.
The Law Enforcement system in the United States is not perfect and never will be, but it is a hell of a lot better than Law Enforcement in the majority of other countries on this planet (Mexico, all of South America, all of Central America, all of Asia, all of the Middle East, etc.).

If you dont think your living in a police state here in america, you dont get out enough or your not well informed.
The OP is spot on
http://www.criminaljusticedegreehub.com/police-state/

Just keep licking those boots and don't question authority. You seem pretty good at it.

I was going to ask that either of you share your personal experiences with feeling these jackboots on your necks and how it might be prevented in the future, but subsequent posts have me reconsidering. My opinion is that neither of you have any interest in doing more than driving the wedge deeper. Whatever the solution may be, it won't come from either of you. Feel free to continue your hatefest, but I'm out! :(

Chuckie, please don't confuse the Anarchy Crusaders with the facts. Facts are a bother they try not to mess with.
Just keep on keeping on while America's boys in blue keep killing an average of 2.6 people per day. I'm still waiting for someone why that's okay and why it's so much higher rate than other developed countries.

Keep on trucking, yourself. Walk, don't drive, though. One hundred people a day are killed in this country in automobile accidents.

Dude! You're on a gun forum where people can buy and sell ghastly handguns without governmental interventions. No other "developed" country allows its citizens the same freedom. Like I told you reading and comprehension are fundamental.

If more people, including criminals, have guns that's inevitably going to led to more armed confrontations between police and citizens. It's really elementary.
