Well I just received a letter on this past Saturday saying that I had been selected for a gun hunt there on 11/18 - 11/19. Never have been to the area at all so any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Update - I just called to get a little more information since I've never been part of a draw in Oklahoma I wasn't sure how they did it. In TX, you go the weekend before to scout then you pick an area you want and you are designated that area for your hunt. The Canton WMA let me know that the way they do it is way different. 75 hunters were drawn and have to sign-in on Friday and then you can hunt anywhere you want or walk around anywhere you want. They don't assign groups anymore and there is no way to tell who's going where. To me that puts a huge damper for I do not like walking into an area if I don't know who's going to be there, especially with a rifle.

The area can handle the number of hunters they let in. It wasn't an issue when I got drawn a few years ago. It was a very good hunt that year, we saw lots of deer. Watch for pigs as they can get big out there.

I don't remember which campground we were in but it was on the south side and had some fields close by. Seen a lot of deer in the fields but they don't stand still in them, if you get a shot it will be a moving shot, and likely at a pretty fair distance. There is a nice camp ground on the north side. It's a couple/few miles west of the entrance to the headquarters. You can walk for hours up there, good looking ground. Keep in mind that canton is open for ML and the easy parts may have been stomped out. Go deep and see some deer. Pigs on the north side so ask if you can choot em!

Exactly why I never put in for Canton any more. Buddy and I drew in there years ago, and went out of our way to get off the beaten path and find a couple of good stand locations. I was in a tree, while he was on the ground probably a quarter to a half mile away from me, and we got there way before sunrise. Just after sunrise, we had guys wandering around, talking, smoking, joking around and neither one of us was ever spotted. After they departed our area, so did we. Never been back.
Its BS they let that hunt go like that.
That sucks. It was a good hunt when I was drawn. The drawing hunt was first weekend of gun season. After that it was open to gun hunting. Dunno if it's still that way, if so I could see it getting really nuts. But we were camped beside a group that were there for the whole week, they had hunted it for several years too. They were a good bunch so we made sure to give them space in the field. They were really helpful and welcoming in return. That was quite a contrast to some interactions we'd had out east.

I actually loved it. I setup south of the Dam and had no one ever walk in on me and I had deer all around me. I had one decent 8 pt walk by, following a doe, but I let him go. I was really just enjoying getting to be out in the woods.
