I found you can discard your old plate but obviously you would need to buy a new one...Duh lol. All vehicles still need to be registered within 30 days of purchase, there is a 5 day period for getting a plate put on your vehicle after a purchase (if you don't have a plate or a temp) and during those 5 days you must have a copy of the bill of sale or the title with the vehicle . Vehicles purchased from a dealer will still get a 30 day temp tag.

I knew I shouldn't have thrown those registration papers away.

Keep the plate, no problem, but are you required to use it on the next vehicle you purchase? I still don't see why you need the papers, just like insurance verification, they have it on their computer correct? This is going to be a big mess for a lot of people that forget their plate, or do not have their registration papers.

Papers please.....no? Step out of the car and keep your hands in sight.

Is the piece of paper you get with the new tag sticker each year not your registration?
That's it. Your not required to carry a title in the vehicle. Now, that being said some of the sophisticated printers can produce some easy registration papers to sell to anyone.
I'd prefer they scan the VIN and use the internet to confirm but that won't happen unless all leo get Sat phones because some of our rural areas just do not have internet service.

It'll keep people from buying our used cars and then driving them without insurance until they hit someone. I expect it'll make things a little easier for law enforcement overall.
I drove to Washington state and pulled into a military lodging area and the guard wanted to see my registration. I told him that Oklahoma doesn't require me to keep the paper in my car so I don't. He let me in but I was miffed somewhat. Now when I get new registration I just toss the paper in the glove box and it'll be there when and if I need the thing.

In 25 years of driving,
I have never, ever had an officer ask for my "registration".
I think its a Hollywood movie thing to ask for "license & registration".
For me it has always been "license & proof of insurance".

I always keep it in the car anyway, otherwise I would loose it. Then every few years I go thru & throw away the oldest papers.

We always put ours in the safe, but for some reason I always put the boat registration in the boat. I don't remember if its required for boats to have the registration onboard, but have always done it so there must have been a reason to trigger that?
