Thanks guys. I appreciate your answers. I honestly wasn't sure on this, been told by a few that it could be done without ffl dealers. I bought a Ruger M77 from a person in New York and now will have him ship it to my dealer. Gonna cost me $20 for transfer fee and a $100 for shipping. ugh.

yeah lots of online deals look good, but then the other costs are added (conveniently at the time of purchase or even after) and they aren't so good anymore.

Under federal law, an unlicensed individual is prohibited from transferring a firearm to an individual who does not reside in the same state as the transferee. Generally, for a person to lawfully transfer a firearm to an unlicensed person who resides out of state, the firearm must be shipped to an FFL within the recipient’s state of residence
I drive to OKC area a lot to meet up with OSA people. My drive down is cheaper than the markup on most guns being sold up here.
when gas was cheap is was too easy. i jumped on the turnpike when some deals were 10 minutes old lol.
Unless I have missed information in life, these are the basic rules:
* In your home state, you can generally buy guns of any type from a private party, or a dealer (rules vary by state though, so this is true in OK at least).
* If you are traveling out of state, you CANNOT buy guns from a private party legally.
* If you are traveling out of state, you CAN buy long guns through a dealer/FFL but MUST go through any state specific processes for the state you are in. For example, an OK resident can buy a rifle in Florida, but would be subject to the waiting period for it.
* If you are traveling out of state you CANNOT buy pistols through a dealer/FFL.
* If you are buying a gun from out of state, it MUST be transferred to you via an FFL in your state of residence.
* There are no known exceptions for "neighbor states" as these are federal rules.
Note that these are assuming all purchasers are of proper age for the item being transferred/purchased, and have no disqualifiers from owning such as a felony conviction, domestic, drug use, etc. And this definitely doesn't cover NFA items.
