They are called magazines, not clips. When did they start calling them clips? Is that a Hollywood invention? I don't know why that rubs me the wrong way, it just does.

Now I wonder where the use of "clip" came from. Could it have been with the Mauser C96?

Yes, the M1 Garand uses an en block clip inserted into the magazine well and was ejected out the top when empty. Mausers, Enfields, and other European rifles were reloaded with stripper clips. Some Austrian rifles used a preloaded clip inserted into the magazine well, similar to the Garand, but fell out the bottom of the mag well when empty.

I suspect the misinterpretation of the words 'magazine' and 'clip' were like made during WWII. With the 1911, M1 Carbine, Sten gun, and numerous Axis weapons being loaded with a sheet metal magazine, uninformed grunts likely thought they were the same thing.
