I'd forgotten about the Swanson's chicken or beef pot pies. Put a slice of gov cheese on it. Mmmm.
Pot pies by Swanson were for rich people. We had Banquet which were smaller but cost a whole lot less. Big staples were mac 'n cheese and dry cereals. Anybody have 'milk toast' (milk over toast sprinkled with sugar)? Dinners were lima beans 'n ham or baked summer squash with margarine and salt . . . or fried liver 'n onions (on special occasions) 🤗

Strangely I don't regret, as a kid and then as a young married soldier, of not having adequate food on the table What it did however was give me a slight phobia these days about not having enough food stored away. Much like a squirrel come fall, my pantry is now well stocked . . . and it stays that way!

I still like a potted meat sandwich now and then on white bread with lots of mayonnaise.

Dinty Moore stew topped with some chili is pretty good eating especially if the chili is homemade.

Something about those extruded processed meats is just not filling. I could eat an entire log of bologna or 3 cans of spam and still be hungry, but an 8oz steak has me stuffed.
