I just got the new copy of Shooting Times and it has an article for S&W's new M&P15-22 and it looks and sounds pretty cool. I was just wondering if anybody has seen or better yet laid hands on one. With an MSRP of $499 that would be a great practice gun if it is any good.

Did the article say who made it? Probably a Umarex (sp) like Colt except with S&W on it. Order a 1000 and they'll put you name on it. LOL

Have a buddy that just got one! We shot the poop out of it last weekend, feeds anything and is pretty dang accurate. Not a bad little gun for $425 out the door!

Synthetic lower, I think the stock was intergrated into the lower, and not interchangeable with ar stuff as much as the colt. I didnt look at the thing enough to see if you can accesorize with ar stuff.

I have both the S&W MP15-22 and the Colt M4 OPS-22, the S&W is by far my favorite. The MP15-22 is made by S&W, unlike the Colt which is made by Walther and imported by Umarex. Even thought the MP15-22 is composed of a polymer upper and lower it seems well made and fits up good. On the S&W the bolt release and safety work just like a regular AR, not so for the Colt. The S&W appears to have a solid barrel whereas the Colt has a sleeved one. I cannot knock either gun for accuracy as both seem very capable.

The Colt is a lot more ammo sensitive than the S&W. I tried out the Colt as soon as I got it home, with a quick cleaning and lube, it would barely feed Remington Golden bulk and when it would feed it wouldn't go bang about 9 times out of 10. I was very disappointed at this point. The next day I tried some Winchester 333 bulk from Wal-Mart and the Colt ran flawlessly, didnt even seem like the same gun. The S&W will feed the Remington Golden with an occaisional hicup, good firing pin strikes but some failures to go bang.

The S&W ran good with CCI Standard (the blue box), Winchester 333 bulk pack, American Eagle, CCI Minimag & Stingers, and Winchester Superspeed.

The Colt seems very ammo sensitive much like my Walther P22 was which choked on everything but CCI Stingers and Mini-mags until I fired about 500 rounds through it, now the P22 is much more tolerant of bulk ammo, perhaps the M4 OPS will work out the same. I have fired about 500 rounds through the M4 OPS once I figured out what ammo it likes. Federal Automatch worked well in both rifles, the regular 525 or 550 bulk Federal was not as reliable. I have 450 rounds through the MP15-22. So, for my opinion for what it is worth, I much prefer the S&W over the Colt for cost, fun factor, ease of cleaning and reliability. The Colt has small springs much like the Walther G22 rifle does, and won't field strip down as far as the S&W will.

I did have one issue with the S&W where I experienced a failure to feed (possibly due to my error in trying to load a magazine too fast and had a round nose down). The extractor came out of the bolt along with it's spring and plunger. Fortunately I found all the parts and put them back in, I had the plunger in with the wrong side facing out and I had failures to extract as the extractor was not gripping the cases right. I corrected that, and had no further problems. I hope to shoot more soon and report any issues.
