I want a 10/22 that I can hand down to my son when he's old enough. In your opinion, what's the best route?

Build one from scratch?

Buy a basic model and mod if needed?

You may want to consider a spare stock at the least, that you can cut down and use when he is young and then which out when he is bigger that's what I did . I still have a cut down stock somewhere in the house

I saw a short 10/22 on here, I think. Pardon me while I look.

Here it is!!! http://www.okshooters.com/showthread.php?114448-FS-Ruger-10-22-Compact-Model

Shoot, I might need this for me!

I have one of the youth models. It started out as my son's, and is now my daughters. Here it is next to a regular 10/22.

buying two is a great idea. also build one your self. let him decide when he gets old enough as to what kind of accessories he wants. that way he knows its his creation and will appreciate it more. IMO
