I have seen tons of 3" Kimber pistols run flawlessly. More than likely, you are dealing with an extractor tuning issue. The Extractor really needs to be beveled on the bottom edge and the tension is also a little more critical on the 3" guns. If you cant seem to get it running the way you want, bring it to OPS. We will hammer on it for ya.

Kimber sold various guns with special codes engraved on the side of the slide.

Depending on your friend's gun, it might be one of the series that had issues (and the code will tell you that).

There are known lists out there on the internet of Kimbers that have issues - if your friend's gun has a special code on the side of the slide that starts with a "K" and ends with "imber", its one of the problem guns.
