Got the hunters ed. class finished up today so we are legal!! The deer should be very afraid, the boy is fired up to say the least. Big thanks to the Newcastle PD for hosting and teaching the class today, first class all the way.

My 12yo froze up on 4 doe at 40 yards this morning and let them trot off. She said she was shaking too much. I didn't give her a hard time and we spent the afternoon shooting at a target. This evening she took a couple of shots at a coyote at about 100 yards. She didn't fill her tag, but she's ready for rifle season.

Took my 14yr old out the whole weekend. He shot at a doe on Friday morning but missed. He finally connected on this 80lb doe at about 20 yards at 7:40am this morning. Yes, I did say 20 yards. Had to stop her before she got closer. He was pumped. We hadn't been sitting for more than 15 minutes when she came in. Public land by the way. He is 3 for 3 on the youth hunts the last 3 years. I think he is hooked.

This was my 11yr old boys first deer hunt. I consider him very lucky to have harvested this his first time out. I was really proud as they started coming in around 3pm on Friday and he wanted the first deer he saw which was a doe. Talked him into waiting and watching. Then comes a 4pt. around 5pm and told him have some patience. Finally this guy starting darting in and out of the tree line about 6:50pm. Finally got the shot at 7:05pm, one shot you can see the entry, 150 yards, with a .243 that his grandfater gave him (let him use) for the hunt.

My 12yr old has his opportunity as well. Again the deer started coming in around 330pm Saturday afternoon. Watched and waited and at least an 8pt came out of the trees about 5:30. He aimed and shot and missed at about 100 yards. I think he flinched slightly. Deer ran off, we went and looked for a blood trail or any sign that he did hit him and couldn't find anything. Went back into the blind and 20 minutes later we had deer again. About 6.45 7 doe and 3 bucks starting coming in about 400 yards away. Got within about 300 yards but wouldn't get any closer and then it was dark.

All and all a complete success for my boys first hunt. I will say I was dissappointed in the morning hunts as we only saw 4 doe one morning at day break for about 10 minutes before they left. Other than that the morning hunt was dreadfully quiet but the afternoon made up for that.

Oh, forgot to add my oldest that missed his deer Saturday afternoon did make a kill. We were leaving the blind Sunday morning and were headed home. There was a coyote looking at us. He asked me if he could kill it I said sure. He sighted in, took the shot and dropped him. Walked it off at 180yrds. Go figure missed a big deer at 100 yards and dropped a small coyote at 180. Anyway he was happy.

Wow, what I weekend and I think (hope) I have them hooked for life! They are already saying they want to go with me again next month. I'm a lucky dad!

Took my 12yr old son out for his second deer season, and my 12yr old nephew out for his first season. Friday morning right at day-break a 8 point came out and my nephew DRT him right there at 60 yards. It weighed 177lbs, my son with his mother saw nothing. Sat evening nephew dropped a 131lb doe with my wife at the same place also 60 yards, my son and I saw a real nice tall antlered deer came out and heard the safety being let off and was gone in a second. Last night of hunting my son and I were hunting where he shot his first deer last year that weighed 260lbs. About 5:50 pm two small bucks came out he took the largest one a 7 pointer 125lber. Until you do it you'll never know how proud you can be to know you were a part of something that I can't put into words. (all weights were on the hoof) Pictures will follow.
