You can definitely coat stainless without issue, most just choose not to because stainless is an alloy of carbon steel, chromium, and molybdenum, which makes it almost impervious to rust and thus not requiring a finish like normal carbon steel would. But none the less if you don't want that glare you gotta coat it!

People need to remember that Cerakote and Duracoat are coatings just as IonBond and NP3 and NIB-x, while Tennifer/Melonite/Isonite/QPQ/Carbo Nitride etc are metal treatments. for comparisons

http://www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/testing/

Reality -- comparing one persons/shop sample to another isn't going to prove anything as there are too many variables, Even with NIC trained coaters/specialists. Those variable include the whole Prep Process, Spray technique and equip, curing capabilities/ovens/control, GEN of the compound and its mixed ratio…..etc

Hopefully people will List their Coater and before/after usage pics - Like Harsh or others who have numerous samples to yield (well, if the owner wants to show and tell both after coating and after usage). Can judge both the Coater and the Product….

Cerakote vs Duracoat = Duracoat is softer and thus a more pliable option that worked better for polymers and other surfaces that flex'd = This was early on in the Cerakote genealogy for firearms applications. Which is why people sprayed the plastics and such with Dura and the Metal parts with Cerakote. Today's Gen of Cerakote has taken care of that gap...

Cerakote, NP3 plus, Nitride are the top of their game IMO.

I agree on the difficulty of comparing guns coated by different persons/ shops. I've Cerakoted several guns and followed the instructions exactly, but I'd bet that someone that went to the class and does it on a regular basis will create a better end product.

Still, it's do-able at home if you can media blast, have an airbrush and oven.

I wish Airborn coatings was still in OKC. They had an industrial Teflon like coating that was tough as woodpecker lips http://www.jetcoat.com/xylan.html . I had them coat a pistol, then later sent it to EGW for NP3 coating and they called me to ask what the previous coating was. It was difficult to remove and they wanted to avoid over blasting with media.
