Is something wrong with the kitten or is it perfectly healthy normal kitten?

You know everyone is holding out on this. I won't even say, but I wouldn't give it a second thought!
I don't think I could, but my aunt lives out in the country and had a stray cat that had pretty much made itself at home on their property. Long story short, the cat had a litter of kittens and was barely able to feed herself, let alone the kittens. Also, my aunt thinks the litter was fathered by one of the cat's previous male kittens, leading to problems from in-breeding.
She ended up killing the litter by drowning them in a bucket of water. It only took about 30 seconds per kitten. She's a tough country woman.

What circumstances would necessitate killing a kitten?
This kitten is a perfectly normal and happy kitten playing with a ball of yarn on a HallMark Christmas card.
