It's no different than leaving your car parked in a hotel lot or in an apartment complex. As long as meth heads can scope it out and get to it, the risk exists.

Even if they outlawed metal recycling places in all of North America, the global market still exists for rare metals and the theft would still occur.

Probably the most likely solution will be vehicle manufacturers installing theft shields during the assembly line process. Won't cost them much to source some bent sheet metal with drainage and bolt holes and then charge $595 as a factory option.

My youngest brother got a new DeWalt Sawzall a couple years back. He had stopped at a local restaurant and a lady came in saying a guy was under a truck making the god awful noise! He went out to the parking lot as it was his service truck, drug the guy out by his ankles, beat him unconscious and drug in the ditch, kept the New 20v Dewalt Sawzall. We had to weld up his exhaust.
