Dangerous wildlife in the Skiatook/Tulsa area?

Hi,
I just moved to Skiatook 2 days ago and am wondering what kinds of animals I might come across while hiking or what may wander onto the property. I ask because I want to know if I need to upgrade to a more powerful handgun to carry during a hike or walking the dog. Since my previous place of residence (San Diego), didn't allow us to carry, my most powerful handgun/cartridge combo is a S&W Model 27 in .357mag, and I was thinking of upgrading to an M&P 10mm or a Taurus Raging Hunter in 44mag. My only form of defense against San Diego county's biggest threat (coyotes) when walking my dog, was to carry a length of steel cable attached to a wooden handle, and it was pretty common to see coyotes stalking people who were walking small to medium sized dogs when I left for work in the morning.

You should be just fine with a 357, but if you’re looking for an excuse to buy a new gun, go for it.

Lots of cougar in the skiatook area, mostly in and around the Wally World the first of the month. Most folks carry a pocketful of those Trojan hollowtips for protection.

If Skiatook is anything like Tulsa ...

We have lots of predators in So. Tulsa dangerous to (unattended) small animals. Coyote, Fox, Hawks, Owls. But they are all more afraid of you than you are of them.

The sasquatch can get pretty sketchy from time to time if you happen to wander into their territory. If spotted there's a team of hunters that you'll occasionally see around Claremore. Can't miss their truck. Watch yer 6!

Other humans are the only predators I would worry about, so whatever you think you'll need to take care of those should the need arise. You're not going to run into pet hungry coyotes or mountain lions like in southern California.

Second this. Tulsa predators can be a little bit on the cray cray side. Better to have and not need than to need and not have.
