My wife and I rode the Durango-Silverton train for the first time last August. We really enjoyed it and thought it was well worth the time and money.
We rode the train up and the bus back which gave us plenty of time in Silverton to eat lunch and walk around town without getting back to Durango too late. The bus driver even pointed out points of interest on the way back.
The railroad museum at the Durango station is interesting and free.
