Thanks for ALL the advice! Used a bit of everyone's suggestions. Far from perfect work, but its fine for an old hand-me-down, blue-worn, Marlin 783 that was already a little beat up. Its got a couple a stock dings that look like a filler and complete sand down and refinishing job. So, they'll just have to be character scares that leave me and its future owners to wonder how they got there. You know, its that one gun you don't mind loaning out to a buddy; or one you don't get freeked out about when junior wacks it against the truck door. Thanks fellows!

It’s an okay stock that has already been sanded on without a butt plate installed. You can see how the end of the stock has been rounded off. I don’t think there’s much to worry about if the amateur takes his time.
