Why don't they make Westerns like that any more?

I'm 43, I can barely remember Gunsmoke in it's first run, but as a kid, I remember them all in syndication; Bonanza, Rawhide, Wagon Train, and even the silly Wild, Wild West. A few years ago on the Encore Westerns Channel, my wife and I discovered Cheyenne and The Virginian. We watched every episode.

I guess it is a reflection on our changing country, but damn TV sucks nowadays!

Because the virtue they portrayed is outdated.

Instead, people want to watch "law enforcement" garbage that extolls the supposed value of local and federal police agencies. Of course I notice that there are no shows that have a sherriff, an elected position.

America has become a predominantly urban society. When westerns were popular there was still a positive cultural memory of the rural frontier. In today's world, those times are considered dangerous and the individual who practices self-reliance is unwise.
