I'll never understand why people advertise that they are not home???

Head scratcher...oh well.

As for the op...I'm not sure what's worse. Checking in at Walmart as part of date night. Or the act of "checking in" at Walmart at all.

Announcing where you are at any given point is a huge no-no anyway in respect to personal security or home security. Savvy bad guys have taken to watching such posts to burglarize homes and such. Plus it feeds your stalkers and creepers...JB, you do have stalkers and creepers right?

For the most part, I only share my check-ins with people that I know. The exceptions are when it's common knowledge that I'm out, or when I want to advertise to tourists a particular business that I like (such as the local Chinese restaurant that I eat at 2-3 times/week).

There are much more efficient ways of determining if someone is or isn't home as well as their current location that are more commonly used.
