They might report it as stolen, and if someone took it to a pawn shop and they report the serial numbers correctly, the photo ID that the pawn shop requires will lead the police to someones front doot. Lying to a pawnbroker is a felony, they don't have to prove that you stole it, but if someone says they have owned it for say 6 months, and the company says they owned it up until a month ago, there will be a problem.
