MRE's are good for at least 5 years. It depends on what temp they are stored at. I keep a few, but can goods are easier, cheaper and don't need water. Depends on what you want them for.

I think you're running off some old info. Military grade MREs are good for much longer than 5 years and don't need water...in fact, many of the canned long term storage items do need water to reconstitute.

But definately wouldn't go all one or the other. A deep and varied larder is best. I keep MREs for early stages or short term situations.

(edit to add: Just saw that you said at least 5 years. You are correct sir. But they'll last much longer if stored well.)
