A friend of mine recently went through orientation and was told that the Action Pistol bays were off limits to all shooters except those registered as Cowboy shooters. can this be true? Since when did RCGC allow a discipline forbid shooters from using the clubs facilities? I understand that Sporting Clays is different since there are very expensive pieces of equipment required to operate that particular sport. Action pistol does not have that requirement so i am confused. Was my friend misinformed at his orientation or has RCGC changed what areas are available to paying members?

I think the cowboy action shooters lease the space from RCGC. That's how it was when they were at NAARGC. I was told they moved their range (lost their lease) from NAARGC because of a safety issue and relocated at Red Castle.

I have not heard or read anything about this. For if it is true, this is a deal breaker for me. I would need a refund on my membership.
I like to use this range to get away from town and shoot with the wife and kids.
I hope your friend is wrong, but it would not surprise me.

You aren't surprised are you? I gave up on Red Castle being interested in the general membership years ago. When you see how much money they spend on big ticket items for the shotgunners vs. how many actually utilize those facilities, you begin to see it. They refused to update the action pistol bays for years despite strong support and positive cash flow from those programs. A lot of volunteer effort went into building and supplying those action pistol bays. The target frames, steel targets and pretty much everything up there didn't come out of the Red Castle budget, they came out of members pockets and proceeds of the matches held there. To tell those people that they aren't welcome on those bays is a slap in the face.

Certain programs at Red Castle enjoy unlimited support, while the rest are tolerated in order to pay for the pet projects. The same goes for the general membership and their dues. They're tolerated to pay for what the elite members want.

I've been a member for 15 years. I continue to maintain that membership for the use of certain facilities not found elsewhere. But I find much frendlier management and much more flexibility at USSA, where I do 95% of my shooting these days.

I went thru orientation in January and that is not what we were told, we were told not to shoot the cowboy action targets with jacketed ammo- cast bullets only. After the orientation I asked the guy doing the orientation about the old steel challenge targets in the last bay and he said it is OK to shoot those and those only with jacketed ammo.

I have shot steel matches there before and it kinda hacked me off that the Cowboy Action shooters took over ALL of those bays so I bought 500 cast bullets from Mitch/J&K and plan to "follow the rules" all over cowboy town. :tounge:

Well good then, I hope that my friend missunderstood his orientation. I plan on using those areas of the club this weekend. I certainy hope that no one challenges my right as a member to be on any area of club property.

Many of the cowboy steel targets at the stillwater range are cast bullet only. In other words, they are soft steel and not suitable (non-hardened steel) for jacketed bullets especially at high velocity. Also because the the cowboy shooters group provided much of the labor to build the cowboy range, it is cowboy shooter members only. At least here, the cowboy shooters leave their steel setup month to month and jacketed bullets would quickly destroy their targets, so they aren't allowed.

I'm not sure if this is a factor at RCGC or not. At SRPC, it certainly is.

Idiots at Red Castle destroy steel with improper ammunition frequently. That and trashing the range are common problems. It's believed that often these problems arise from non-escorted non-members shooting there.

The cowboy range has also had a bunch of targets stolen. Kind of disgusting to see some of the crap that gets done out there by people that can't folow some pretty basic rules.

There should be no reasonj for anything to get stolen. We purcgased ad huge Storage box a few years ago and the brought their own lockable building also.
Not sure about the leasing thing. How can the club lease a piece of the property with out a club vote? or did i miss that one. Also how can the club lease land that they are leasing from the Zink Foundation?
