Red Dot / Tactical Scope on S&W 15-22P

I have a S&W M&P 15-22P. What's the best way to go about putting a quick aquisition type scope on it, without having to jack with the open sights on it? Will a typical red dot work through the existing sights or do you need a 1/2" - 3/4" riser, or do you have to remove the open sights?
