Picked this up today, not sure if I will keep it. My "On Deck" gun was .357 in Ruger or Smith but I ran across this and I pulled the trigger so to speak.

I am still in my learning process on S&W revolvers. I know this is a 629-1 6", mid-lug, N-frame, pre-lock. Not sure when it was made, guessing in mid-80's.

SN# AESXXXX. More info would be much appreciated.

The "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" is an excellent reference book for all S&W firearms.

It shows your 629-1 was probably made in 1984.

" 629-1 (1982): Eliminate cylinder counterbore and pin barrel; slight change in cylinder length to 1.69"."

" Jan. 1984 ADT 3000"
" Nov. 1984 AEV-AFJ"

More information maybe obtained by requesting a "Factory Letter" from S&W. There is a charge for the letter.

I would be happy to help. The best I can gather, your 629 was made in mid 1984. This was after S&W had done away with the barrel retention pin and the recessed cylinder. Nice!

Mr357Sig, the shrouded J frame is among my two favorite S&Ws. Can't quite tell from the pic but is it a model 38 or 49?

Nope. :D

I think both of them are messed up. I think the barrels are loose because they have a weird looking pin drilled though them to hold them on. They also didn't bore the holes in the cylinder all the way. There is a small hole bored, but the actual size hole is very shallow in the back.
