I had a 69 Mustang--it was the Mach 1 trim but with the old 351 Windsor engine and a three speed manual transmission. I called it the "Mock 1!"
I guess where you stand depends on what you think the Corvette is? Is it a sports car or a GT coupe? It can't do both well and I think GM wants to remind people that it's intended to be a sports car with a racing pedigree. To maintain that goal, the engineers simply ran out of room to improve on the front engine, rear drive Vette platform. The current ZR1 with ZTK package should best all but probably the McLaren 720S in the "supercar" field, but it doesn't. even with all the aero aids, it can't put the power down and can't deal with the corners effectively, especially if they're off camber or bumpy. As a result, it can't lay down top notch lap times and when even remotely pushed to the edge, it makes drivers nervous.
That's why the C8 will be mid-engine. They want to beat cars like the Porsche 911 GT2; Ferrari 488 Pista; Lamborghini Huracan Evo, McLaren 650S and 675LT; Audi R8 V10 Performance, etc. They want it on an affordable budget while doing it. It's amazing that the base price will only go up $5K when you consider the increased potential for the car. Putting the LT5 behind the driver with some type of pushrod suspension will vault the C8 into full contention with the supercars listed above. That means the new C8.R will have the potential to be a world beater. If the rumored LT6 and LT7 engines come to pass, it's possible the top tier Vette could crack into the "hypercar" class.
That means the Camaro will have to pull GT coupe duty, which it's probably better suited to do than the C7 anyway. The Chevrolet stable isn't large enough to justify upscaling the current C7 Vette to true GT coupe spec, and selling it between the Camaro and C8. Would a C7 GT car sell well? Probably, but how cool is it to buy a true mid-engine V8 sports car that will compete with the best the world has to offer, for under a hundred grand? Pretty cool indeed.
Oh and for those who hate the new C8? Just as there were killer deals on 67 Vettes when the Stingray came out in 68', there should be some pretty killer deals on C7's when the C8's hit the lots. You can already get a new C7 coupe as low as $44K and a Grand Sport as low as $54K.
