100 years ago, we had child labor and lots of people, who found themselves in unexpectedly hard circumstances did suffer immensely.

Government welfare was acutally around 100 years ago as well. Hell it was even around in Roman times!

The biggest problem is that currently, it's administration allows for too much abuse and it's structure encourages laziness.

MADD, if God forbid, you get laid off, don't file for unemployment, because government shouldn't be in the charity business.

And maybe it's the trickle down effect of burdening businesses with too many taxes for these charities that cause companies to lay people off.

Goes both ways homeboy.

This was written by my 15-yr old Son...

A nation built upon the values of freedom, equality and justice gives up those values for money, power, and control. I refuse to declare myself a member of this nation until those stated values are returned to the people. In a nation in which the debt of all people is ticking like a clock every second, a nation in which the leaders are payed more money than a single mother with three kids with no way to provide for those children. We live in a nation where our God-given, constitutional rights are being threatened by liars, monsters and ticks who suck our money like vampires.

You might want to remind him that renouncing citizenship is a disqualifier for firearms purchases.

Isn't unemployment acutally "unemployment insurance", where that money has been paid in by an employer to cover the possible unemployment of workers? In that case, it isn't "charity", but would be an insurance dividend, right?

I will say that I am an American patriot, and loyal to America. But by "America" I mean the country that was based on the ideals of liberty and freedom. And the government that is present at any given time is not what I am loyal to. If the government at any time becomes tyrannical, then at that time my loyalty is not with the side of the government, but with the ideals of Liberty and Freedom. Should that tyrannical government choose to oppress or criminalize those who take the voice of liberty, then that government is no longer the American government; in terms of what "American" really stands for.

The question is at what point do the American people stand and fight a tyrannical government? Some say we've reached that point. I just hope that the American people will agree that the time has come before we have no way of standing against a tyranny; if and when that should happen.

My biggest gripe with our countrymen today is the lack of personal accountability. The last speech I heard from our dear President was really disheartening. I posted this in response, “Any discussion about spreading someone else's wealth or shifting financial burdens to someone else that can handle it is and always will be socialism. If they choose to do so on their own it is charity. It is that simple."
The problem America is facing is less politics and more philosophical; we are in a battle with other members of our society for freedom from socialism/government oppression. Why can't people buying into this view see the many failures of other countries around the world? It doesn’t help that we are taught in schools that we are animals destined to selfish behavior, not human beings with conscious choices put before us every day. This is reinforced by our welfare system that puts greater rewards on greater irresponsibility, not to mention that currently 50% of our citizens are paying virtually no taxes.
I love this country; I am of the thought that if we straighten our way the best is yet to be seen. However, if we stray from our freedom-loving early history all I can say God help us.

I'll never figure out why you immigrated to a country that you hate so much

Ig, that's crap and you know it.

I don't agree across the board with dutch, but his main deal is that he seems to be a pride goeth before a fall guy, and I don't find much fault in that.

On the flip side to your comment about the ultra-conservatives letting her starve, would it be fair to mention too the ultra-liberals being OK with subsidizing women (with taxpayer's money) to continue having children they can't afford?

Not much difference in that and the republican's love for the child tax credit. Same song; different dance.

Well, not a dividend, but an indemnification. But your concept is sound. Unemployment is quasi-government and quasi-private. Not unlike The Federal Reserve, Grand River Dam Authority, CompSource, etc...
