This makes the two parachute jumps I've done seem tame in comparison.

I would imagine that if he expects to die every time he jumps then statistically his expectations probably won’t disappoint him. Once his expectations are met the guy won’t have such an obsession about it and maybe can finally reach the light at the end of his tunnel.
