If you have the right tools and know what you are doing you can do it yourself. However, unless you are used to doing stuff like that most people wouldn't have all the necessary tools. If you buy the barrel it's not that expensive for a smith to rebarrel your rifle. I would contact Steve Baldwin at Mechanical Accuracy in Jones.

What caliber is it? I thought Steve would install a Hart for $300?

If you're interested in selling the gun (I'm only interested in the action - I'll replace the barrel/stock/recoil-lug/bolt-handle, etc...), send me a PM - I'm on the lookout for some spare parts to start another build.

Heck...you might be better off financially selling it for the action and buying a new one if you're looking for a basic skinny model 700.

Contrary to popular belief you don't need a high dollar Hart barrel. ER Shaw will do the job for most of us!

This is one of those times when it's well worth it to pay the gunsmith to do it right; get the headspacing right; all that. That's what they do.

A Savage is simpler than most, but with Rem, though not complicated - you are much better off with a good gunsmith installing it - it won't cost all that much.
