That is true. That part of it is wrong. When they are broke at the gate, they are usually in the terminal.
Delayed departure or waiting on the tarmac for hours is totally unacceptable and the employees hate that.
There are some things that need to be fixed about that.

I'm' wondering about HMFIC's claim that AA was the only airline who DIDN'T file bankruptcy after 9/11.... is it just me, or am I wrong in remembering if that was because they had ALREADY filed only a couple of years before? Not to mention that the airlines got a huge bailout from the .gov not long after that.

It's true that every airline has filed at some point or other (or so it seems), and yes, employees get the shaft. Yes, pay may be over that of the rest of the economy on average, and that is largely (IMNSHO) due to union pressure, but I also think that is what keeps these companies from being viable in the long-term. There is no real stability in them. Lots of underlying causes in that, from too many chiefs and not enough Indians (both on the company AND union sides) to poor management and bad decisions, to being at the mercy of weather and uncontrollable circumstances, to poor customer service and price-fixing within the industry.

Lots of things here, and yes, peanut is right that this has been seen a long time coming. I don't want to pour salt in anyone's wounds, and I feel for everyone losing their job in this tough economy. However, it may open a door to a career with perhaps a little less in the way of benefits or salary, but a whole lot more in terms of long-term stability for your families!

Good luck!

AA was run into the ground by poor management and its inability to change with the times. Flying is no longer something special reserved for only the wealthy...AA still think that they are something special.

This is only the partial truth. The rest of the story has been going on for years and years out there.

For instance the big union uproar when management NEEDED to install secured turnstiles to access and egress the facility. Employees were leaving while on shift and would either take an extremely long lunch or not come back to work at all. They would just have someone else clock them out. This behavior was supported by the union, either directly or indirectly and the emloyees bitched about the rescrictions. All the company wanted was the productivity they were paying for.

Needles to say, this is not 100% of the managements responsibility...

The economic impact of this will reach out and bite a few people who aren't seeing it coming also.
This is terrible news for the entire community up there.
Just remember folks each dollar turns over several times locally.

I wish these people the best and hope something better comes along soon.

They recalled me last January, and now I'm really glad I didn't go. I still have family working there. There is plenty blame to go around out there. When I was layed off in 2003, after taking a big cut in pay, I heard several executive recieved bonuses of more than 1.5 million each. On the other side, as I was taking my tools out, the mechanics replacing me were talking about shutting down production in the shop because they couldn't have overtime. There are plenty good people out there and I hope it goes well with them, but unfortunately, they are in the middle of the airline management greed and the union management garbage.

Sorry, but the issue is 100% the fault of the management. If they were to incompetent to sell safety percautions to the employees imagine how poor their other skills must be. The union is strong without a doubt, but the company has been poorly managed by the good ol boys club for decades. Maybe SWA will buy their assets.

To chime in on Reddog & Peanut's conversation, 67% of $27 is $18. Not a huge wage but how many AA employees can take their skills anywhere else and earn $18/hr in the Tulsa area? If your skills aren't marketable for a similar wage to what you are being paid, you are being overpaid. Just a thought.
