No one will know how they will react until the moment comes. Having some form of sound plan in the event of a break in/self defense situation, an attorney in mind for afterwards, and an understanding of the emotional toll that you and your family may have (as well as monetary toll,) is a good start. I can't tell you the statistics overall for the original questions you posed, but I can tell you in about ten years of police work in SW OK, I only encoutered one instance where a homeowner used deadly force on an intruder. Short story, the intruder died, and the homeowner didn't face charges.
As an aside, I have been to a few shooting calls, like the one above, and was surprised by the lack of blood from the victim. Usually the victim has to lay for an extended amount of time before blood pools become large. Stabbings and knife wounds seem to bleed all over the place though. Don't use a bayonet and you should be fine.

An intruder in my home will get no warning or chance to negotiate, he/she lost that "right" when they invaded my home. My family's safety is more important than giving the BG a warning. I think one has to determine whether they are ready to deal with the aftermath of: A- I legally kill intruder and maybe or maybe not my family witnesses it, or B, give BG a warning and somehow gets the jump on me and has his way with me and my family, then moves on to some other family later. I choose A.

Given the history of the our esteemed DA's, I would suggest making a loud warning while you're arming yourself. It might not be the the best tactical position but from a legal perspective, if you can demonstrate that you made an attempt to de-escalate from a defensive position and provide the BG with a departure opportunity, you will likely find yourself in a better light with the LEO's and legal community when this BG bites the dust.

You are rying to excuse yourself or pulling the trigger. That dicission must be made before it ever happens eithe you can or you can't.

Also, I couldn't even imagine using a shotgun for home defense. I like a little more control over where I sling lead.[/QUOTE]

How big is your home? I have a 30' hallway and my pattern is still no bigger than a paper plate...
