Why on earth do we tip at restaurants?

Tipping is a ridiculous notion. Tipping is for good service? Where should it stop? Do you tip the life guard at the pool because your kid didn't drown? Tip the Tech at the tire shop because he filled all 4 tires to exactly the perfect pressure? Tip the receptionist at the Dr's office because you didn't sit in the waiting room for over an hour? Extra big tip for dental hygienist at the vet because she killed a flea and cleaned the dog's teeth?

PAY A FAIR WAGE, the worker pays taxes on total compensation, patron pays for the goods.

As far as restaurants go, I DO tip. Because I know the wait staff depends on it, because of the crappy system. I, also, tip on SERVICE, not looks. It has been my experience, usually, the extremely good looking waitress believes she will be tipped heavy because of her looks and so service is marginal. The no so extremely good looking staff typically gives much better and friendlier service.

What REALLY ticks me off, is those establishments take up ALL the tips and then redistributes equally. Such a Babba BS practice. I ask if the place operates in such a manner and tip standard or LESS, regardless of the service and ask for a comment card to leave management a response.

BTW I LUV the kilts. and I go there for the food and the sports TV.

I am truly astonished. Here I thought I was one of the more hateful bastards on here, and there are some of you who don't feel the need to leave a few bucks to a waiter/waitress making sub-minimum wage? I'll not tip for bad service, but the guy/gal bustin' their butt is doing it for the tips. It's part of their income....

Y'all make me look like a nice guy.

Ughhh really? Were we bored or something starting such a that is rife with such dissent.

Having worked in the service industry and managed in the service industry I'll throw my .02 in here.

I'd rather work for sub minimum and tips rather than a "living wage" any day of the week. Places that pay employee's a "living wage" so that they don't have to bust their asses to provide good service for you are called fast food restaurants.

I would rather have employee's working for tips, rather than minimum wage. They do a much better job. When they want to sit on their ass or give someone flak they are messing with their money. I have tipped upwards of 65% but the service was absolutely stunning, the water glasses were never empty, we didn't pour a single drop of wine, and somehow he managed to never ever come by the table and provide service when we had food in our mouths.

There's an art to providing good service and this guy was on top of it, but it requires lots of work and diligence

I hate being asked how something is when I am trying to chew on it.

So because someone disagree with the concept of tipping that makes them a hateful bastard? Regardless if they are just as friendly as the next customer. Its a good thing I come here for the laughs, you guys always deliver.

It isn't about hate and it isn't about love. Waitpersons caint eat your friendliness. They caint eat it, smoke it, feed their chirens with it or rub it in their bellies.

People work for money.
