Certain soil types and the ground freezing will occasionally trip a trap. I've a read a few times where guys up north will run their line to find several tripped traps with no animal sign around. All the old timers point to freezing soil messing with them. I've only had it happen twice, assuming this was the cause.

The iced over tundra here is so noisy walking in that I can't imagine trying to call coyotes in this. I have a buddy that went. We'll see how he does. I am out making dollars.

No sarcasm, I had a bunch out several years ago and they were completely encased in ice. Traps were frozen to the ground, pans froze to the sides, cables and rods frozen to the sides, hinges on the pans and doors frozen, doors frozen solid in the open/up position. Cat tracks in 2 cages, coon tracks in 4 others.

I wonder what the crunchy ice feels like on their feet? The county roads I drove on this morn were snow covered, coyotes had been traveling them heavily overnight.

Question about the coons.

I use the "Duke" Dog proof coon trap (coon cuffs), and use the marshmellows as bait. I only have 3 of these traps set out. I caught 2 last year and 1 so far this year. All three times, after getting the dead coons hand/arm out of the trap, there was no marshmellow left behind the trigger.

Here is my question.
How does this happen?

I bet they may reach in there with the other paw and tear it apart and pull it out. Or if it is the little marshmallows, they probably fall out when the coon jerks/drags the trap around.
