There is a product call Hog-Gone that uses sodium nitrite that will kill the hogs that’s currently being tested by the FDA. It’s been legal in Australia since 2008 and is around 90% effective. Sodium nitrite is used to cure pork so it’s not lethal to human, deer, cattle, etc. but it does a number on hogs. I shot five last night but that's only a drop in the bucket. My neighbor and I have trapped over 40 hogs over the past couple of years but it's not making a dent in the numbers.

First of all, welcome to the site, and the informative post.

I saw a report on this tonight in the evening news. They mentioned a chemical but didn't identify it.
Hogs are pretty smart. We poisoned coyotes for many years, as well as pursuit with dogs, aircraft, etc and we didn't make a dent in the population.
I hope this works.

There was some talk about this here in the states about 3 or 4 years ago iirc. Just like anything, if it has to go thru the feds to become legal or useful, good luck. If it should, it will still take years. Maybe Pruitt will let people dump it by the truck load now :)

Nitrites and nitrates are quite harmful to people, depending upon the amount ingested. The dose makes the poison. They also cause environmental damage if they get into the water.

Exactly... when curing meats, you have to be very very careful to get the right amount or you can end up in trouble. Kills humans the same way it kills hogs. It can be an effective tool, but the delivery method would be the trick.

Its my opinion that there is nothing we can do. Create incentive for trappers and shooters to go out and spend money doing it is the only thing that might work. You have to eliminate 70% of the population in order to just sustain their numbers. The state is only making it worse with the new laws they passed last year.

And if you're going to complain about cost...stop thinking helicopters are the answer. The old saying is that a helicopter will make a millionaire out of a billionaire.
