Adrian Peterson has yet to rush as many yards as Sanders and hes had 4 more years to do it in LOL AND Sanders did that playing for the worst team in the NFL with no team help.
And two years of his first 9 he played in 1 game and 3 games respectively. If he had played those two years fully his numbers would have bested Sanders. He beat Sanders in yardage by his 100th game. And had only 2 touchdowns less than Sanders even with missing most of the 2014 and 2016 seasons.
He missed a lot of games because he was too busy proudly abusing children.
EDIT: I admit that this remark is a red herring, and more than a little unfair. Proudly abusing your own children should not be considered an impediment to being the greatest athlete ever.

Nuff said. That pretty much removes any "best" status he could have ever gotten.
The numbers really don't stack up either. Sanders retired from a crappy team while he was still at the top of his game.
He had several years left in him. He chose to use them spending time with his family rather than terrorizing them.
Again, I'm not making some kind of value judgement here, I've just come up with this idea that caring for children is good and abusing children is bad, YMMV
