I was just about to edit and add above; all my credit cards are signed with “See ID” on the back. Every single time a clerk flips it over and then asks to see my ID I thank them profusely for asking.

That's not the best thing to do and does nothing to prevent fraud and misuse. Actually, the card is not valid unless signed by the card holder so technically they don't even have to accept it. Also, Visa (and others) merchant agreements do not allow merchants to make presenting an ID a condition of sale. They can ask to see it but (generally) can't make it a condition of sale. But all that being said, most merchants and their salespeople don't know crap.

My banker buddy told me to sign em like that, and he issues cards, so …

I think actually losing the card is the least of anyone’s worries anymore.

Your banker buddy is wrong. Look it up. Most card issuers no longer require a signature, but MC and Visa still technically consider them invalid without one, as signatures today are obsolete. I still have one card that states that however. Depends on the issuer it seems.

You most likely have zero liability if someone uses your lost card, so why worry at all?

Paying with cash.
Right. Well that is a bit ridiculous to need ID if all you were buying was the glasses.

But not to worry! As we continue to move toward a cashless digital society, eventually our money and ID will all be built in to our implanted chips. So convenient! (Half sarcasm half genuine concern lol)

From a card issuer website:
"

What About Writing “See ID”?

Some well-meaning cardholders have written “See ID” on the back of their cards. The idea behind this practice is to reduce the chance of fraud by requiring that cashiers cross-check their cards against their driver’s license or another form of identification.

But unfortunately, this doesn’t satisfy the requirement to sign the back of your card.

And many merchant agreements prohibit retailers from requiring cardholders to present identification as a condition of the sale."

My cards say See Drivers License instead of my signature. I have never had anyone refuse to accept it and, as a matter of fact, I'm happily surprised if they even bother to look for a signature. The other thing is you do not even have to hand your card to anyone at many businesses these days, you just stick it in their card reader grab your receipt and leave. The whole process has opened the door for thieves who get their hands on someones credit or debit cards.

Met a buddy at Buffalo Wild Wings for a couple beers a couple weeks ago. Sat at the bar and the little gal asked me for my ID, then apologized. I told her it wasn’t a big deal, and then said just what you said above. She asked me if I could sit at her bar all day, and bought our first round.

Seriously, if bitching, pissing & moaning about someone asking for your ID, is all you’ve got to complain about, then you’ve got it all going your way. I can’t imagine a grown ass man complaining about having to show an ID. Every hair on my head & chin is white as snow, and I look 10 years older than I am. I guess I just don’t get pushed outa shape like some other folks do over minor ****.
I don't mind someone asking to SEE my id for a particular purchase.

I mind if some SCANS my id.

I did look it up. You’re correct. I try to learn something new everyday. I’ve been doing it for 45 + years though, never had an issue.

Like has been discussed, right now a lost card is the last thing anyone should worry about. It’s the theft of the info on the card that concerns me.
