I have mixed feelings about it. He may, or may not, have done it the right way but I get why. Especially now. And the retaliation, if it's true, is inexcusable. I don't think he abandoned the dept any more than the dept, and the city, abandoned him.

I would've at least finished my shift...and probably given two weeks. Just out of courtesy...

I can't count how many nights where I was the only cop on duty. Now it wasn't New Orleans by any stretch, but we're still talking about the exact same calls he would have been dispatched to...domestics, burglary in progress, motor vehicle accidents, prowlers, etc. I would have to respond to those calls ALONE many, many nights.

He should have told his supervisor of his anxiety/discomfort about the lack of backup instead of bailing on them and making all of his fellow brothers/sisters in blue take up the slack that he left.

Crybaby. Harden the :censored: up and get some thicker skin. If you can't hack it, maybe you should sell shoes for a living. This job isn't for the timid.

Yeah, when they told him he didn't finish reports and abandoned his post, I was done with him.
It's not that I was not sympathetic toward him, I was, but damn man, suck it up one more shift. He said he was applying to other departments, With what he did to NOPD, I wouldn't have him.

Same here. Walking up on a car at 0200 out in the boonies on a dirt road where backup is non existant or at best an hour away, was the norm. Many, many times.

What didn't kill us made us stronger ol buddy. Going to calls in the middle of the night all alone makes you a better cop. These young kids getting in the bizness nowadays have no idea.

When I first started in the late 80s I worked a mountain precinct for a large SO in Colorado...bedroom communities of Denver and the metro area. Lots going on and frequently went on calls alone. In-progress, domestics, bar fights, you name it. It wasn't uncommon for backup to be 20 mins or more away, running hot.

I remember the first time I called for routine cover after I finished FTO after I moved down to a metro-area dept. 2 or 3 of our cars showed up, 2 or 3 cars from the adjacent city, 2 Arapahoe County cars, 1 Douglas County car... I didn't know there were that many cops in the state. Hell...the city policy was no officer went on an alarm call alone. What??? I went on shootings alone when I worked in the mountains. Different world working in town.
