I have a Mossberg 535 tactical turkey shotgun. Question is, what choke tube would you recommend for shooting 00 buck or multi-defense ammo? Rather than just shooting it free bore, I feel I need to put something in there to protect the threads.

I just bought some Remington 00 buckshot 3 inch. On the box it said best when shot through a full choke.

You just have to try some different chokes if you have interchangable chokes..my experience plinking at big sheets of cardboard checking buckshot patterns is that cylinder bore patterns horrible with some buck-loads...might miss a fat-man!..However other loads pattern decent/average from the same gun..

From my expermenting with my assortment of riotguns and hunting shotguns...imp.cyl and modified tended to pattern better with everything I tried buckshot-wise. I don't think I even tried full choke!

Fixed-choke cylinder bored riotguns would do well with a brand or two of expensive buffered-buckshot...and were not really all that whoopee with cheap buckshot(Estate..Eley..etc)

home defense shotguns come cylinder bore fixed choke.

00 buck, 9 .32 caliber balls in 12 ga 2 3/4 shell, pattern at 3" at 12' - 18' which seems to me like a realistic distance for home defense.

never heard of using 'full' choke for home defense with buck shot. cylinder bore is 3" at 12' - 18' why would you want to go tighter than that? if anything, i would want to go a little bigger.

the only reason i can think of why a box of remy 3" said full choke if they were thinking deer hunting, then i would want full choke to act more like a bullet because hopefully you are aiming with sights or scope.

You definitely need a choke installed to protect the threads in the barrel. Improved cylinder is a historical favorite for buckshot and slug loads. It would not hurt to try a modified choke as well.

I'm not an expert and a little experimenting sounds in order, but fixed IC choked 870 delivers 9 pellet (2-3/4") 00 well.
But regardless, I'd have something in there to protect the threads.
