During a pre-mission brief, the only thing cooler than hearing A-10s would be on station was the patrol leader saying a Buff would be on orbit. As a wing-wiper surrounded by grunts, it warmed the cockles of my blue heart.

Ever get to make any low level TFR runs in one?
Quick anecdote. Those runs were pretty hard on those long a$$ wings. At a place I used to work for, we quoted supplying every spar and rib in the wings of the entire fleet. Seems they wore them out in the first gulf war and they needed a total overhaul. I doubt it was the first time too as old as they are. Those spars are reeeeaaaaalllllly looooooonnnngggg and there's a crap ton of ribs in them!

ETA: It was Tinker doing the overhaul...

Isn't something similar what spurred the retirement of the C-141s? I seem to remember stress on the wing structure being extreme or something like that...and the cost being too high to justify keeping the airplane in service.

Most of you know B-52s are periodically refurbished at USAF maintenance depots like Tinker AFB . Even while the Air Force works on a new bomber, it intends to keep the B-52H in service until 2045, nearly 90 years after the B-52 first entered service, an unprecedented length of service for any aircraft, civilian or military.

Boeing does not specify any particular engine in its presentation, but says that installing a modern type – almost assuredly a high bypass turbofan of some kind – would give the B-52, 40 percent more flying time with the same fuel load and that missions that presently require three tankers would only need two after the upgrades. In addition, the new jets would be quieter and more environmentally friendly over the existing Pratt & Whitney TF33, which have powered the H-models since they first entered service in 1961.
