since I can't seem to find suitable full time employment I have been thinking about just retiring.Back in the 90's I new an older guy who retired to Belize,he told me he lived a better lifestyle on retirement of $1200 a month there than he did here while working.

So my question is do any of you know anything about it or done it. what is the best country for an American to do this in.or just any info on the subject

Keep in mind that most of the South American counties are anti-gun (at least for civilians). Some have socialist or unstable governments. One of the more stable (and pro-gun) S.A. countries is Uruguay.

I don't need a gun: I rely on the good will of my fellow man and the forbearance of reptiles

If you get a little hut and go nowhere and do nothing you can live cheap.
As a foreigner everyone will try to take advantage of you cause they think all yankees are rich. LOL
everything costs money even if it should be free.
If you decide to go that route.
sell everything you own, except the clothes on your back.
buy new when you get there.
don't buy a car they cost too much to operate and get carjacked. a motorbike maybe (constantly get stolen)
best to use public transportation or a bicycle.

Most likely in 2-3 years when all your money is gone you'll be back. Know several who have tried it, most gave up and came back to the states.
the others sit in a bar all night, tell stories to tourists while bumming drinks and walk the streets like zombies during the day.
