There isn't a significant difference between the 9mm+p or +p+, .40sw, and .357sig when dealing with soft targets (humans), but where the .40sw - and especially the .357sig shine is in barrier penetration, specifically with .357 - auto glass. Barrier penetration is one of the more logical reasons many PDs have gone with the .357sig and .40sw.
