That’s the truth. I used to do that a lot, walk in somewhere that wasn’t owned by a national company, chat up the salesman/cashier/whoever, ask them what their best cash price was if I paid them right now. Always a deal to be had doing that. Doesn’t matter if it was a tool at a pawn shop, a tint job for the car, new tires from the small Mexican shop down the street, whatever.
