Here’s a couple more pictures of the same plot. Today 9/14/18 average plant height is 4” checked thoroughly for an my worms the larger plot is surrounded by native pasture so very little window paning even on the edges. The smaller plot has Bermuda to the north and native to the south. Slight window paning to the north but minimal and nothing on the south end. This plot is also average 4” in height. The amount of tracks indicate lots of deer use already. About 1/3 the amount of tracks in the wheat and its average of 2” in height.

Here’s the larger bfo plot from the air a couple of stressed areas going to do another soil sample and see what is going on.

the stressed area isn’t a drainage issue. My guess is a nutrition deficiency but a soil sample will tell me exactly what’s going on.

So hear are some smaller plots near known Buck bedding areas. Three of them laid out on different sides of a pocket of timber for different winds. All are ~1.5 acres. I planted bfo’s and a blend of deerslayers 4x4 plot blend. These are difficult to get a tractor the size we have into. (Smallest we have is 125hp) I did get them sprayed with glycophosphate and disked. For planting I broadcast them with a Scott’s lawn spreader I also applied 85lb acre of triple 13 as the soil samples called for. Our ground actually has phosphorus deficiency’s. Nitrogen and potassium levels where ok. I drug the fertilizer and seed in with a 3x5 piece of heavy gauge expanded metal behind my small ranch truck. I made sure the 100 gallon fuel tank was nearly full for extra traction. These where put in 9/15/18 I’m very blessed with equipment at work but the best option was a strong back for these plots. Pushing one of those plastic tiny wheeled spreaders was a chore across disked ground. My coverage isn’t as uniform as I’d like but that’s all my error.

Agin glassing early and late shows deer walking across wheat to get to the oats. I’ll get some phone scope footage of the does. They don’t even drop their heads in the wheat. It’s been an interesting observation.

Okay okay, I feel like I've been shamed (almost, kinda sorta like) so I'm gonna go pick up 200 pounds of 13-13-13 and 200 pounds of oats and see what I can do to get a little bit more food for these deer...
I believe broadcast rate for oats, wheat or rye is 100#/acre. Be careful to not just buy feed oats at the feed store. If you don't find seed oats, look for a forage wheat.
I also suggest a grow cage to put out where you plant. Think of a 3' diameter tomato cage to keep deer/rabbits from grazing inside the cage. Without the cage, you may think nothing grew if grazing pressure is heavy enough to keep it grazed down. It is eye opening to see the difference during December and January.
