So did Jack Klugman. RIP to both these great character actors and pretty great indivduals. Durning is going to be buried at Arlington.

Durning was a real war hero. Received the Silver Star and 4 purple hearts. One thing not many know is that he was one of the survivors of the Malmedy massacre during the Battle of the Bulge.

Not a lot of that generation left. Passing of an age and a great generation.

Wow! I wasn't aware of Charles Durning's war record. He was a good representative of "everyman" on the screen.

He was great in his recurring role on "Rescue Me". Was also a good song and dance man in "O Brother Where Art Thou". RIP, Charles.

He was also a "D Day" veteran, and was reportedly the only survivor of his unit. He got bayonetted, and it's my understanding he killed the German soldier who did it with a rock. He was reluctant to be interviewed about his wartime experiences.

RIP to a war hero, he was in the first wave at Omaha beach, second man off his barge, the 1st and 3rd man were killed.
