My church is small. Last year the elders approved the creation of a security team. Members are approved by the elders & pastor, and the team leader has final veto power over admittance to the team or not. Hasn't had to use that yet. We're all current/retired cops or military, though that's not a requirement. We only carry concealed, and have pepper spray and other less-lethal equipment. Members have to pass the same quals the local PD does (new and old CLEET quals) and have their concealed carry permit to carry as a team member.

We shoot monthly, and have additional training in other subjects after the range session is over...medical, less-lethal, hands-on skills, legal reviews, scenario training, etc. Training responsibilities rotate monthly, so everybody has to teach and contribute. All of our shooting is from concealment, and we mix in less-lethal & no-shoots into our range time.

On Sundays, one of us arrives before any staff, does a building check, turns on the lights, etc. We have a member at each door as a greeter, and once the service starts all doors but one are locked (no entrance, exit only), and own of us sits by the unlocked entrance to deal with latecomers & watch the parking lot. He's also around the corner from the nursery. The rest of the team sits distributed around the sanctuary, with their families.

We have plans for fire, weather & medical events as well as violence, but we don't share them with the congregation. If something pops off, the team leader issues instructions, or a designated elder if the TL is busy.

All the book suggestions earlier in the thread are solid. The WPS guy (Lovell?) has a church security series on YouTube that covers all the bases.

I have a question. I see your plans and they look good. Do you have any plans to deal with the unwanted help? IE the church member that is not trained by you all but is still carrying? One non security team member who sees a situation and acts prematurely? Outside the box thinking here.

When the team was announced at a members meeting, the request from the elders was to take reasonable action to defend yourself and your family when necessary, but let the team handle things if possible. It was well-recieved, and hasn't been an issue yet.

Honestly, if our church was bigger it would be a more pressing concern, but considering our small size and the fact everyone knows the score, it's not something we've spent a lot of time on. What are your thoughts?

I agree with let the team handle it. But there are always variables. Small church, everyone knows each other, their capabilities and limitations. It's just something else to plan for. The team needs to know everyone in the church. Even grandma that only carries her Raven to Walmart and church. What if there is a family asking for handouts that goes sour? Is there an active LE officer with jurisdiction or are all retired or out of jurisdiction? You might want to look into deputy commissions for qualified officers.

I realize you can plan yourself silly and the first moment the plan will not work is usually the first contact with the enemy.

Just some food for thought.

Any of y’all ever felt like someone was feeling out your church for a soft target? Ours is a lot like GED’s, country church, usually 40-60 people, a few miles off the highway so it’s not convenient. Anyway had a guy no one knew showed up Sunday. Obviously nothing happened but his mannerisms and way he decided to sit and fidget during the service had everyone just a bit on edge.

We've only had one guest that was a legitimate physical threat, but church gets "felt up" for petty crime all the time. Same size and similar location...we'll regularly have methamphetamine enthusiasts walk or drive through our parking lot and test door handles. Less frequently, they'll come inside, sit through half the service and then try to wander around and get into the back offices. They always leave when redirected towards the bathrooms.

Did anyone introduce themselves to him? Get his name and his story?

I take it that outsiders aren’t welcome there?
