Coin Collecting

Howdy all,

In my boredom I decided to dig out my coin collection to see what, if any, coins had value. I collect coins in the same way many people might collect "as seen on TV" stuff. If it looks cool, I keep it. I've got coins with bullet holes, some stuff I was given as a kid, the patriot in me collects every bicentennial quarter I find, but I don't know jack all about values.

Some time back I picked up an atrocious penny from a drain and kept it because it was cool.

Dug it back out today and got some good light on it

Now of course I have to ask, is it worth anything? My assumption is it's worth it's weight in scrap iron, but seeing at its what's left of a 1944 steel penny, I had to ask. Thanks in advance!

If its steel penny you might need some reverse electrolysis to put some steel back in place

Do the magnet test, if it picks the cent up it’s steel, more than likely it’s copper.

a 1944 steel would be very rare that one is heavily damaged. They have been counterfeited using a 1943 steel penny and glued 4 from the 1944.

I have a few steel pennies as well but I don’t collect cents. The 43s are common and not worth over a few cents each.

That one looks to be copper. If that is a 44 steel penny the value can range from
$20,000 to $400,000. It depends on the mint mark, no mark being the lowest
to the S mark being the highest. That one for sure is not in good shape,

Ya'll were correct. I ought to have thought about a magnet sooner, but it's not magnetic. Just a piece of scrap copper worth almost $.02

1944 copper Lincoln cent: 1.5 billion minted, worth between 3 and 5 cents
1944-D copper Lincoln cent: 430 million minted, worth between 3 and 5 cents
1944-S copper Lincoln cent: 283 million minted, worth between 3 and 5 cents
1944-D over S copper Lincoln cent: worth $100 or more
1944 steel penny: 15 – 20 minted, worth $100,000 or more

I have a 1943 steel wheat penny that's worth about 20¢.

They're 90% silver.
I have a can with pre-1964 US coins that my mother started and I EDC a 1921 Morgan silver dollar in my change pocket; that way I'm never broke.
