Nearly all of the Bear Grylls stuff that Gerber makes is garbage. I've taken a couple of survival-type items back because they flat out didn't work. I would definitely not attempt to survive with anything he puts his name on.
If you want something that looks cool and you can play with, its probably fine, but if you want something for actual survival, I'd look at ESEE (formerly RAT Cutlery), or something similar. They make a fire-starter, a knife in every flavor as well as a few other cool survival goodies that are actually tested by folks who had to depend on them for survival.
The blade on Gerber's LMF II is nearly putty-soft and Grylls knife is made from the same stuff (Grylls knife looks like Gerber slightly modified the LMF II slightly).
