First duck point

We went quail hunting today, and gunner went on point in the middle of a field. My cousin walked over there expecting quail or pheasant to flush. He kicked the bush, and finally saw this mallard duck hunkered down. He was alive, but hurt or sick. Nobody had a duck stamp so we had to leave it there.

Was there any water nearby? That's strange for a mallard to be just out there in the middle of a field.

No water in the area that was open. its all pretty much frozen over around here now on the ponds. There was a small grove of young trees nearby, and we wondered if it flew into the trees or something?

It's probably one of the two I shot and only wounded this morning and they ended up running off.. so frustrating

A couple years ago I jumped a pond before going quail hunting, must have wounded one because later that day a couple hundred yards from the pond my dog pointed a wounded duck. It was a surprise to see a green head hobble away instead of a couple quail.
