You did not say how long she was going to be away, so this might be too late. As double backup in case your wife has a more sensitive nose than you do, like mine does, set up a small fan to blow across the area as long as you can. Don't ask how I know.
As for the Fabreze or something like that, you will have to explain why you stunk up the house with that stuff. Better off using a manly thing, cigar smoke, spilt gas or desil on your shoes, stepped on a dog pile you did not notice and tracked it in, or something like that.
Or, you could just tell her you spilt it on just a little part of your part of the carpet and her parts are still ok.
